I know, eveybody knows the Beatles, everybody loves them (well, most do), everybody shares them,... they're the most iconic group ever so why would I want to add to all this? What's the point drawing attention to what everybody is more than aware of already? The answer is that in reality people don't know (or don't know any-more). Beatles still get airplay and whenever there is an opportunity record companies will try to cash in on e.g. 50 years of Sgt. Peppers. But in reality I always hear the same 20 or so songs out of the huge legacy the Beatles left us. Why? Well, because that's the way the business works. It isn't about quality (which of course whatever they promote has) but about selling the same cash crops over and over again. So here's one of my favourite songs which I seldom hear on air, this time by two of the greatest Beatle-fans. In the case of Jeff Lynne, he's arguably the most important musician that kept the Beatles sound alive over the last (almost) 5 decades. I know, the original is even better but this is such a meaningfull tribute.
We doen ons best. NRBQ again
Long time I focused on the Quartet. Well this time it's only a quarter quartet to be honest. It is the real Terry Adams with a bunch of new guys performing under the NRBQ-label. It always feels a bit of a fraud to see such a radical personnel change but I must admit this Quartet+ does a fine job capturing the original spirit courtesy to addition of the SunRa Horns.

NRBQ
Not the first time I share a clip of these guys known by some as the greatest white R&B band in the world, as the New Rhythm & Blues Quartet or simply as NRBQ. I also warned against the addictiveness of their music. Ideal companion for long trips on the road. Another band I regret not having seen live.

Les Cactus
Never thought I'd become a fan. With this one they got me hooked. For some time at least. Alex Turner catches the thrill of the original 50 years ago, even has the same Dutronc cool "moqueur". The fun thing of course is the way he pronounces "cactus". Old rascal Jacques must surely be happy with this tribute.
You could also watch the version with lyrics below if you really want to know what it's about.

Bouli, yes!

Poisoning Pigeons in the Park
Late version but still with an ever so strong didactic message. If you're bored by intro speeches just skip the first 2 minutes.

XTC: Dear God

Officer Krupke
Saturday night attended the spectacular open air performance of 'West Side Story' in a choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui in Ghent. Next day this lead me to look up the original Officer Krupke filmscoresong on Youtube. Even now, almost 50 years after I first saw it, I can't watch this brilliant hilarious scene without feeling somehow to be part of it. Does this tell something about me or is getting one to identify simply what any meaningful piece of art should do?
